Muley Abdallah, (Emperor of Morocco) his Letter to Bashaw Hamet, of Tangier.

Thanks be to God;

To our Brother in the Fear of the blessed God, Bashaw Hamet Ben-Alley, God preserve thee, and the Peace of God and his Blessings fix and attend thee.

We have received thy esteemed and elegant Letter, and know its Contents: God receive thee according to thy Loyalty; we acknowledge thy Love to us, and thy Loyal Services, and are satisfied in thy Duty as thou writest, and we leave thee in thy Services, and renew to thee our full Power, and Favour, in what thou hast been in, and augment it.

Take Care of defending against the Infidels, the Prosperity of thy Government, and its Inhabitants; for we have thee in great Regard, and thou wilt be always satisfied of our good Will. We know what has past in our absence relating to the Infidels, and would have thee take Care, and shall serve thee with all Things necessary. With God's leave thou art a happy Man, and it's a God that hath favoured thee in that Post, and the State of thy true Religion.

God preserve thee in Grace.

Bashaw Hamet, to whom this Letter is directed, was in the Interest of the late Emperor; but upon his Brother's Dethronement of him, he fled to Lisbon, and there made his Application to Sir John Norris, who received him in a very handsome Manner, Shewed him the Men of War, and sent him in the Dread-nought, a 60 Gun Ship, to Gibraltar, from whence he wrote to the Emperor, whose Aunt he married, tendering him his best Service, and excusing for his Attachment to the late Emperor. Mulley Abdallah was graciously pleased to receive him into his Favour, and to send him this Letter in Answer: And in return for Sir John Norris's Civilities, Bashaw Hamet has made a very favourable Report of the English, who are now in the greatest Esteem; while the Dutch and French are not permitted to appear at his Court, nor to solicit for any Redemption of Slaves, or to treat for any other Business.
