The Norfolk Landmark says:

"It is desired to see Mr. Barbour made Senator. We have not altered our opinion in any particular as to his eminent fitness for the place; and it goes without saying that we greatly regret his defeat. All of which we say without prejudice to the gentleman who was successful. But Mr. Barbour has one consolation which nothing can take away from him. He rallied our people from defeat. Thrice he led us to victory, and if he has been rewarded with ingratitude it is not his fault, nor is his case exceptional in the history of republics."
