PRESIDENT KISSES AN INVALID CHILD

And His Press Agent Letteth Not the Incident Get Away.

PORTLAND, Or., May 21.—President Roosevelt visited Salem, Or., this morning and arrived in Portland this afternoon to spend the night. Among the festivities here were a parade and human flag composed of 400 school girls.

At Salem, on the way to the station, the president noticed an invalid child lying on a stretcher on the curbing. He stopped his carriage, alighted and kissed the little girl.

The cornerstone of the Lewis and Clark monument in this city was laid this afternoon, President Roosevelt giving an address.
