A Monster Grapevine for the Centennial.
[From the San Francisco Chronicle]
Last evening the celebrated monster grapevine of Santa Barbara arrived on board the steamer Mobongo, boxed up in seven large boxes for shipment to the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, by request of the State Centennial Commissioner. The enormous proportions and unequaled fruitage of this ponderous vine have made its fame world-wide. Its foliage covered 10,000 square feet, bore six tons of grapes annually, and is from 60 to 100 years old. Eight feet from the ground it is five and a half feet in circumference. It branches into twenty large limbs at that height, and one of these limbs is 27 inches in circumference. This limb is the exact size of the Queen of England's celebrated Hampton Court vine, which is the largest in all Europe. The Santa Barbara vine will be prominent among the curiosities at the Centennial, and of immense value to California by attracting the attention of the world to the wonderful productions of our soil and climate.
