AN ALLEGED MAD ANIMAL CAUSES A SCARE IN WEST SEVENTEENTH ST.
Five persons were bitten yesterday afternoon in West Seventeenth-st. between Sixth and Seventh aves., by an alleged mad dog.
The injured ones are Joseph Field, twelve years old, of No. 17 West Seventeenth-st.; Joseph Flynn, twelve years old, No. 17 West Seventeenth-st.; Mrs. Mary Beckoven, twenty-six years old, of No. 217 West Sixteenth-st.; Joseph Marine, thirty years old, of No. 240 Mott-st., and Joseph Murphy, thirty-five years old, of No. 304 Seventh-ave.
Field, Flynn and Mrs. Beckoven were bitten in the hands, Marine in the left leg and Murphy in the foot.
The dog first appeared in Seventeenth-st. near Sixth-ave. and attacked Field and Flynn, who were playing in the street. Next he bit Mrs. Beckoven and then ran into Seventh-ave. and around into Sixteenth-st. into the rear of No. 17 West Sixteenth-st.
There the animal was killed by M. J. Moran, of No. 17 West Eighteenth-st., who used a club. Policeman Troy, of the West Thirteenth Street police station, made sure of the job by shooting the dog through the head. The injured persons had their wounds dressed by a surgeon from the New-York Hospital.
