Almost 3,000 city school system administrative and maintenance employees will receive two-step pay raises as a result of action taken by the Atlanta Board of Education meeting in special session Tuesday.
The raises, retroactive to July 1 will cost the city some $250,000 a year. The cost for the remainder of 1962 will run close to $122,000, it was indicated.
The objective of the raises is to relate school jobs and pay and similar jobs and pay in other divisions of the city government, officials announced.
City employees-those answerable to the mayor and board of aldermen-were given a two-step raise back in April.
The board, at the Tuesday meeting, also voted full summer pay for the school system's school nurses. Nurses have been paid for nine months work only. The new action assures them year-round pay.
The board also designated the First National Bank as the depository bank for school cafeteria funds. The system is just now centralizing handling of cafeteria funds and personnel.
Dr. Rufus Clement, at the meeting, made a motion and the board approved it asking Supt. John Letson to write Mayor Ivan Allen requesting that the city not again act unilaterally in raising its employees.
Board members voiced the hope that the city and school system in the future can consult each other about prospective across-the-board pay raises.
