Full Text

From the Norfolk Herald:

When pleasure call'd at fortune's will

Is made to disappear;

And sorrow's sent its place to fill.

How sweet is pity's tear

When mis'ry with her haggard train,

Close frowning in her rear,

Grasps on the wretch, ah! then 'tis plain

That sweet is pity's tear:

When foes are nigh, and friends desert

When grief and sorrow's near;

Who cannot then with truth assert

That sweet is pity's tear.

When he who wears the form of man;

His fellow form ensnares;

Turn from him pity if you can,

Nor bless him with your tears

My friends desert, my foes oppress;

Both care and grief are near;

Look on me pity, turn and bless;

Ah! bless me with a tear.
