My curiosity has prompted me to visit many buildings, &c. struck by lightning, but I have never seen any, where the violence of the destructive meteor was so amazingly great, as at Mr. Legare's house. The gable of the east end is so shattered as to render it necessary to be taken down; the doors and windows, with their cases, are torn to pieces and wainscotting, beaufets, furniture, other materials, saved the whole house and furniture from such astonishing destruction.—Happily none of Mr. Legare's family received any hurt, they all being in the other end of the house; but a Negro wench the property of Mr. Cato Ash, having taken shelter under a balcony, was killed on the spot.
The explosion was so great as to occasion several persons in other adjacent houses to be thrown from their seats, and it is said, that Mr. Legare and two of his sons were tumbled by it, but recovered very soon after.
