FIFTEEN WILY CELESTIALS ARRESTED FOR GAMBLING.
Lin Hing's Game Finally Broken Up by the Police—A Very Important Capture.
Last evening about 7 o'clock the saunterers on Spring street were treated to the sight of several police wagon loads of Chinamen, who were rapidly whirled past them to the city jail. The celestials had been engaged in playing the gay and festive game of fan-tan, and to the number of 15 were safely placed in quod.
It has been known for some time past that "fan-tan" games were again being conducted in Chinatown, but just where was a question very hard to solve. Several days ago Detective Hawley and Officer Robbins received a tip, and by diligently following it up located the game in the second story of Wong Chong's restaurant, at Marchessault and Alameda streets.
Very quietly last night the two officers climbed to the roof of the porch, which runs along one side of the building, and glancing down through an open window and a lace curtain saw a crowd of Chinamen industriously playing their hard-earned coin in the seductive game.
One glance was sufficient and then the two officers quietly sneaked away and were soon in consultation with Officers Harris, Davis and Lennon of the Chinatown squad, who took positions near at hand to await the first dash of Hawley and Robbins into the room. Robbins took the front entrance and Hawley the rear. Quickly dashing past the Chinese "look-outs" they rushed into the room before its inmates could hear the alarm signal.
Then ensued a scene of the wildest confusion, the Chinamen making desperate efforts to escape. The clubs of the officers soon reduced them to subjection, and when the reserve force appeared on the scene they saw a very limp collection of Chinamen, no doubt all thoroughly cursing their bad luck at being caught.
The game was conducted by Lin Hing, with Ah Fawn as cashier. The entire outfit was booked at the station and some of them released on cash bail for their appearance in court tomorrow.
