FEARS OF A RAILROAD STRIKE IN NEW-YORK STATE.
ELMIRA, March 27 (Special).-There is much uneasiness here to-night caused by the rumor that a general strike is probable on the Erie and Northern Central Railroads. A man familiar with railroad affairs said: "I know that the Erie Company has been threatened with serious labor troubles in the past few days on nearly all its divisions. Superintendents of the road were summoned to New-York, it is believed, to consult as to what means to avoid repetition of the serious troubles of 1877. The changes at the head are the most feared, but if a strike occurs it will be sweeping in its character."
Superintendent Cable, of the Susquehanna Division with headquarters here, said that the engineers wanted a different method of pay for overtime, and met in Jersey City to discuss the matter, that after conferring they were satisfied with the old overtime plan of the company, and also that local grievances brought up were looked over and that all were satisfied when the conference adjourned.
An employee of the Northern Central, under the man who was superintendent when the old cut has not been forgotten, nor the humiliation of 1877. There were local grievances all along the line, he said, and the recent plan of compulsory insurance placed that road in such a condition that little is required to cause a strike.
