Attracts Hundreds
The Merchant's Carnival, sponsored by the Lexington Business and Professional Women's Club, was a decided success as well as unique event that attracted hundreds of people from the city as well as adjoining areas. The store building was crowded thruout the day until late at night as the exhibitions of the local business firms held attention all day Saturday.
Booths gaily decorated and exhibiting a leading line handled by the firm contained a representation of practically every business house in the city. The merchandise displayed also convinced that Lexington merchants are modern and alert to the demands of the trade and their displays would do credit to a large city.
Free drinks given by the Lexington Coca-Cola Bottling Co., with ice cream in abundance sponsored as follows: McNair's by Henrich Drug Store: Fortune's by Peoples Drug Store and Seale-Lily by Beall's Drug Store, were among the many remembrances given the visitors.
Candy and sandwiches sold by the local club added other features to the carnival spirit. Demonstrations in food and drink were also featured by the Mississippi Power & Light Co., and Leflore Coffee Co. Music was also furnished all day by the Junior Boys Band of Lexington.
Merchants and business firms in the Carnival were represented as follows: C. S. Harrell, O. L. Ellison, Rathell Dry Goods Co., Henrich Drug Store. First National Bank. Postal Telegraph Cable Co., Southern Bell Telephone Co., Orchid Beauty Shoppe, Patterson's Variety Store, Carter Chevrolet Co., Beall's Drug Store, Peoples Drug Store, D. Flink. Moore & Co., Mississippi Power & Light Co., Watson's Insurance Co., Lewis Grocer Co., Applebaum Brothers, B. Schur. Pic and Pay Grocery, The Fincher Co.
At 5 o'clock a free drawing was held to award food products cooked by the Mississippi Power & Light Co. and resulted as follows: angel food cake won by Mrs. F. A. Kern; 3-lb. steak by little Miss Ada Johnson. Each person who registered during the day was eligible in the drawing.
Selection of the prettiest booth displayed was decided upon popular vote and resulted in the award being given to Rathell Dry Goods Co. The decorations were made by Mrs. Joe H. Moore and colors featured were in keeping with Washington's Bicentennial observation.
Prizes awarded by the Jitney-Jungle in coin guessing contest resulted in 8 that guessed correctly. Drawings were made to award prizes that were given to Miss Lizzie Connolly, Celian Lewis and M. B. Petty.
Especially attractive was the club window containing the 19 members' names and introduced in novel illustrations of their professions. Proceeds of the event netted $51.66. A delegate will be sent to the state convention that meets in Jackson April 16-18th from funds derived through the Merchants' Carnival. Repetition next year is planned by the club on a more elaborate scale, and judging from the success of this year's event. it will be anticipated community-wide.
