A special dispatch to the Little Rock Gazette from Prescott says:

On Saturday, June 30, a Sheriff's posse, consisting of Rev. F. Sanders, Dr. F. M. Mann and Deputy Sheriff W. B. White, started from here to Louisiana in pursuit of James Thompson, a notorious character who fled some here a few weeks ago to avoid arrest for horse and cattle stealing. Scouting through several parishes in Louisiana without success they were returning home, when, at a point in Arkansas on Red River bottom, fifty miles south of this place on the night of July 3d, they arrived at old Shrog Lewis', the headquarters of horse-thieves and outlaws from Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. On making inquiries for Thompson, a desperate fight in a dark room ensued between the posse and the thieves. Rev. F. Sanders, one of the ablest and most highly respected ministers of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, received a mortal wound by the first fire. Mann and White completely riddled the murderer of Sanders with four loads of buckshot. Mr. Sanders leaves a large family, and his untimely end has cast a gloom over the entire community.
