'Justice and Fairness'
"Justice and fairness" -to borrow a phrase from President Eisenhower- are all that the CIO is asking of Congress as the lawmakers get down to the job of amending the Taft-Hartley Act.
The President's message to Congress talked specifically about correcting faults in the law. That's a big assignment. There's evidence that a lot of GOP and Dixiecrat Congressmen want to duck it.
Some would like to leave all the old faults -and include a few new ones. They'd like to place unions unfairly under the anti-trust statutes, or break up industry-wide and company-wide bargaining, or write into the act a flock of new minor harassments.
The CIO Executive Board has pointed the finger at seven major areas of Taft-Hartley badly in need of change. If all, or most, of the CIO proposals are turned down by the conservatives in Congress, you can be sure that Taft-Hartley won't be corrected; it will be white-washed.
