AMERICAN ADMIRALS.
A proposition has been submitted to congress to make provision for creating admirals of the navy. We hope it will be adopted. Such a provision will increase the spirit of emulation which already prevails to a high degree in our navy; it will open a new and rich prospect of reward and distinction, compatible with our republican institutions, to our naval heroes; and when the republic shall be enabled to send out large squadrons and fleets, the command of them should be given, as a suitable mark of public gratitude, to those who may previously have proved themselves equal to the duties and deserving the honor of admirals or commanders in chief of the navy.
