Mary's Letter
Dear Folks:
Do you grow very tall timber amongst your Wood county male population down in your neck of the woods? And how are you fixed for short ladies who would care to enter in our Monday afternoon contest at the Perrysburg Farmers Institute Monday afternoon, February 7th. at High school auditorium. Those who prove to the audience they rank among the long and short of Wood county folks will not be short of cash after the tape measure's findings are recorded.
Better get interested Little Women and Tree-Top-Tall men. Folks I so often wonder just why I indulge in such active work on this Farm Institute each year. Do you imagine for a moment those long warm months of onion weeding and potato bug picking and pickle peddling may have left it's imprint on my youthful soul?
Forty two years ago our quartette sang at Grand Rapids Farm Institute and we did have a fine time over there, and now after so many years I find myself knee deep in Institute work, getting a great joy out of it.
This year will surpass anything we ever have attempted. Walter can you imagine it? Our business men gave us over six hundred dollars in 'advertising so that we may be certain of success. What we are doing any other town can do. We walk on hand in hand with the business men holding one hand and the School from the superintendent to the littlest kiddo in Kindergarten holding on to the other. And believe me we make a pretty trio. E. Pluribus Unum say we. Team work personified. The children sell all the tickets, the School puts on the play and to make that trio a four square the populace buy tickets until it hurts. We clear over five hundred dollars each year on the play. We split even with the school and is everybody happy? You said it Folks.
Our great committee of over 35 never let up one moment until every thing is well done. Our farmers give the apples, potatoes and eggs which are presented to town folks who do not have those treasures. Our business men provide the money for the lovely prizes given so generously. Our Schools give us the music and the play. We are a united people down here in Perrysburg, the oldest town in Wood county. And now after several weeks active work on that Institute I feel that I can qualify as the oldest woman in Wood county, if feelings count.
Great life and it's nice work if you can get it and you can get it if you try.
Come on down folks and meet some real folks who have accomplished very near the Utopia which I always hoped for Weston. If that blessed town could forget for the moment their differences and unite in one great church. What a wonderful thing that would be.
And this town sure does support anything like our institute. When our church gives a dinner you see almost as many good Catholics and Presbyterians and Methodists there as of our own membership. Believe me folks Perrysburg is a great town and going places just because we are a united people. Can you imagine five greenhouses all begging us to decorate with their choicest palms and plants?
No one asked them but they know that we need just that finishing touch to make the picture perfect.
Say folks if I do not quit my telling you, you will think I have adopted this town for my very own. Just two towns are in my list as the best-est of the best. So you from my home town come and visit the town which I now call mine. Be seeing you Feb. 7, 8, 9.
MAME SPENCER HOHL.
