Correspondence.

The St. Paul correspondent of the Winona Argus, one of the most literary gentlemen of Minnesota, and a thorough democrat, writing from this city a day or two after the late election, discourseth in this wise:

St. Paul, Oct. 14, 1854.

Dear Argus:—The election here passed off on Tuesday more peaceably and quietly than could possibly have been anticipated under the circumstances;—no fights,—no rows, and but little noise except what was expended in patriotic declamation. The result was a regular old-fashioned triumph of the organized democracy, and a terrible lesson to fusionists and mongrels; the opposition ticket being composed of three Whigs and two pretended Democrats. The average majority for the five Democratic representatives is nearly one hundred.

Mr. Fullerton had the highest vote, and Mr. Hollinshead the lowest on the defeated ticket.

It is thought that Dr. F. Andros will be elected in Cass County over Peter Roy the opposing candidate, and a member of the last Legislature.

The partial returns which we have from your district incline me to the opinion that Mr. Huff will be returned from there.

Our city is now full of strangers, and the arrival of every steamer adds hundreds to the number.

The navigation, however, is becoming every day more difficult, and Pig's Eye bar is again bristling up and threatening trouble to our navigators.

A company is being organized here for the erection of a large hotel in the lower part of the city, to cost $50,000 to $60,000. Other extensive improvements are being made, and I have never seen St. Paul presenting such strong evidences of substantial prosperity as at the present time.

Yours,

ION.
