Sheriff's Report Indicated Speed Caused Crash
Two Madison County residents were killed and seven others were hospitalized Saturday afternoon as the result of a one car accident about 8 miles south of London on route 56. Sheriff Herbert C. Markley identified the dead as John McNutt, 37, and his daughter, Martha Louise, 7.
Injured in the accident were the widow, Mrs. Ida McNutt, 37, reported in fair condition at Fayette County Memorial Hospital: William Cagle, 20; Shirley McNutt, 9; Elizabeth McNutt, 11; Joseph McNutt, 13; John Cagle, 16 and Kathy McNutt, 1 year old. Mrs. McNutt and William Cagle were both suffering from fractures and lacerations plus multiple bruises.
All the others suffered shock, abrasions and bruises.
According to Sheriff Markley, reports indicated the driver had been drinking before the accident, and was driving at a high rate of speed. Markley said the car left the road on the right-hand side and careened across the road, leaving the highway and plunging into a ravine.
State Highway Patrolmen and the London Police Department assisted Sheriff Markley in the investigation.
The bodies are being shipped to Jasper, Alabama, where arrangements will be handled.
