THE WHOLE MATTER.

The result of the election does not differ essentially from the conjecture made in this paper last week, when the returns of 113 towns were before us. In a poll of about 60,000 votes, Williams will have a meagre majority of a few hundreds, and the political character of the House remains to be determined by ballotings for the organization of that body. In that branch, the Radicals claim a majority of ten; and to make up even that, count men for whom they would gladly pay a heavy premium, and others whose votes will not be obtained for Radicalism, under any conceivable circumstances.

The battle was fought most manfully and honorably by the opponents of the Slave Power, and with utter desperation by the Radicals. Men of that party, claiming respectability in society, uttered the most shameless untruths before the people; and although oftentimes confounded upon the spot by a few home questions from Whigs who chanced to be present, had the effrontery to repeat their falsehoods before new and successive audiences. Money, to the amount probably of $25,000, was sent in from Washington and the custom-houses along the coast, and lavished with great freedom in making slave votes. So egregiously were the honest people in many towns deceived, that in the simplicity of their souls they really believed the Wilmot Proviso was a measure which nominal democracy originated and sustained, and that but for the Whigs it would have passed Congress. By these and similar outrages upon the public credulity, the State is carried by a bare majority, and a year at least must pass ere the people can punish the men who have duped them into the support of measures for which nine in ten of them have the utmost repugnance. Let the deceivers make the most of their success, and enjoy, if they can, a result accomplished by the foulest means ever resorted to in a New-England election.

This result will, it is feared, essentially strengthen the Slave Power, and make the strife more sanguinary when new Slave States apply for admission. The news of our election will give rise to a general jubilee in South Carolina; and, while they despise us for our servility, will be hatching new plots with which to dupe the North in the next Congress. May heaven deliver us from the consequences of our own acts, since we adopt the sure means to effect our own ruin.
