With the marines choosing the freedom of the city after curfew tonight for the first time since the landing of the American force, Vera Cruz took on something like its usual placid appearance. Under a proclamation issued by Rear Admiral Fletcher, the bluejackets patrols on the street ceased halting civilians and the natives moved about the Alameda and other centers taking an unusual interest in the foreign colony. Admiral Fletcher is making every effort to get word to the Mexicans in the interior, giving them a truthful account of the conduct of the Americans since landing and the orderly conditions in Vera Cruz where American rule is being made as pleasant as possible. The admiral believes the Mexicans have been steadily reassured and that they would not welcome a return of the Huerta forces. For the first time in ten years the city is the spectacle of an Alameda gathering in peace which found and loading them into box cars. With the exception of the marines all the American sailormen who took Vera Cruz from the Mexicans will leave the decks here and return to their ships Thursday afternoon. The pass of the bluejackets will be taken in hand by Brigadier General Funston and his staff. Admiral Fletcher and his staff sailed the American pilot a is headed to the seas.
