Realistic Scene
Prompts Rescue
At Capitol Theatre

The several thousand curious onlookers and forty members of the location troupe of Universal-International's "I Was a Shoplifter,"
which ends tonight at the Capitol Theatre, did not realize it, of course,
but they watched a real-life rescue take place off the shore at La Jolla,
Calif., when Mona Freeman was carried from the water and resuscitated by life guards.

The film script called for Mona to dash from a cabana on the beach into the surf and to swim "until apparently exhausted" in a suicide attempt. Scott Brady, who co-stars with Mona in the film, was to race into the water and save her.

But when Mona flung an arm upward, 100 yards offshore, it was a pair of husky life guards who dashed in ahead of Brady and went to work, carrying Miss Freeman to the beach and reviving her with artificial respiration.
