[Translated from the Spanish.]
Colombians, the country's deliver'd again.
Venezuela has broken her chains,
And around Carabobo the wide stretching plain
As a tomb to the tyrants remains.
The foes have ye not seen in combat to yield,
Who had followed their leader to fight
And turn in confusion their steps from the field
And seek for their safety in flight?
Have ye not the wild groans on the battle field heard,
Which their torments had wrung, ere their death,
From the wounded, to whom by the lead had been spared
In its fury some remnant o' breath?
And drench'd with their blood, which had flow'd like the rain,
Have ye not the dark battle field found
And strewn o'er the plain with the limbs of the slain
Which the sabre had scatter'd around?
The deluded in crowds has the array not ta'en,
(Who had yielded to 'scape from the slaughter.)
That Oppression & Spain had assembled in vain
As their tools, when sought to enslave?
The Spanish Colossus has fallen, at length,
From the summit of pride it had won;
Its glory is over, and gone is its strength,
Its dominion and power are done.
No longer a home can opprobrium find
'Mongst a people who now will be free—
Venezuela her banner unfolds to the wind;
And the tyrants shall tremble to see.
And ye noble Chiefs who have served as the guard
Of her freedom, and led her to fame,
Where, where shall your country provide the reward
Which your valour and constancy claim?
Let gratitude, firm and as lasting as time,
(Of the noblest ambition the aim,)
Be paid you by her as the tribute sublime
Of respect, which she owes to your fame.
And long will the country remember the names
Of the heroes who won her her life,
And the army loud shouting its champions' claims,
As its hope and support in the strife.
The names of Bermudez, Paez, Bolivar,
Of their country the glory shall be,
And be heard with applause as the watch words in war,
Of a nation both haughty and free.
Then let them advance o'er Colombia's plains,
Of the Spaniard the terror and scourge,
And spreading confusion among his remains,
Their bold steeds in pursuit let them urge.
Once more let them lead our hands to renown;
Let them give their sharp brands to the air—
And plant on the squares and the gates of each town
Of Colombia the standard of fear.
