Governor Gregory was the first chief executive to die in office for nearly a century.
Hon. Arthur Fenner of this city, governor under the royal charter, was the last to pass away during his own regime on Oct. 15, 1805.
There are ten ex-governors now living: Hon. William Sprague, Hon. Henry Howard, Hon. Augustus O. Bourne, Hon. George Peabody Wetmore, Hon. John W. Davis, Hon. Royal C. Taft, Hon. Herbert W. Ladd, Hon. D. Russell Brown, Hon. Charles Warren Lippitt and Hon. Elisha Dyer.
