Full Text

On Tuesday last, at a called session of the Court of Oyer and Terminer for Shenandoah county, came on the trial of negro Joe, a slave, the property of Geo. F. Hupp, Esq. charged with having committed a Rape on a respectable and elderly lady, on Sunday the 27th ult. The circumstances, as disclosed by the testimony on the part of the prosecution, were of the most outrageous and diabolical character, and aggravated by a subsequent attempt at murder. He was found guilty by the Court, and sentenced to be executed on Friday the 20th day of November next. His brazen front, and chilling indifference pending his trial, render him altogether a fit subject for the discipline of a hangman.

Chas. U. Lovell, Esq. was assigned by the court as counsel for the prisoner. Joseph H. Samuels, Esq. (in the absence of the Attorney for the Commonwealth) conducted the prosecution on the part of the State.
