COURT CITES LONG LEADER FOR CONTEMPT
Failure To Move Troops Brings Charge: Open Warfare Still Threatened.

NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 4--(AP)--. Lieutenant Numa P. Avendano, in command of the state militia which is holding the city registration office, tonight was cited for contempt for ignoring a court order restraining the use of troops in the political warfare between Senator Huey P. Long and Mayor T. Semmes Walmsley.

Lieutenant Avendano was ordered to appear in court next Thursday to answer the contempt charge.

An injunction already has been issued against Senator Long and Adjutant General Ray H. Fleming, commander of the National guard, seeking to have them remove the troops from New Orleans but the officials have virtually ignored the orders.

The injunction was obtained by two candidates for congress in the September 11 democratic primary who charged that the martial law principals were abridging their rights by seizing the registration office and books.

Although Governor O. K. Allen declared today that Senator Long was "sore at him" because he would not dismiss the troops and had gone into the country for about ten days to chop wood, the Times-Picayune said Senator Long was seen on the streets of New Orleans.

Tonight troop replacements were observed at the registration office just across narrow LaFayette street from the City Hall and Mayor Walmsley sent a hundred policemen to the City Hall in a challenge to Long to try "to take the building."

Curious spectators dotted LaFayette Square but there was no outward show of violence.

Referring to Senator Long, Governor Allen said he'll be gone about ten days. He got sore at me because I wouldn't dismiss the militia in New Orleans, so I put overalls on him and sent him off to the country to chop wood."
