Ex-Governor Fairfield out!!
Mr. Fairfield has written a long letter to his friends "for the public eye," which appears in the last Age, on the subject of the North Eastern Boundary. It is in reply to a note from the loco foco leaders of the opposition faction, who take great care not to interrogate him respecting his extravagant and extraordinary bargainings and allowances during the late Aroostook war! No! they are quite too old to ask any more light on that subject! The TEN DOLLAR-A-DAY BUSINESS, and the thousands of "MISSING DAYS' LABOR," are too well known to the people already, for their comfort.
Mr. Fairfield's views on the Boundary question are well enough, but too stale for this late period of the controversy. Gov. Kent expressed more truth on that subject four or five years ago! Fairfield has just found out that "all patience is exhausted." Kent and the Whigs knew that long ago; and Gov. Kent has just obtained the aid of Massachusetts and the co-operation of the General Government, and sent on two companies of U. S. soldiers to plant the AMERICAN STANDARD there in a portion of "the disputed territory," for the FIRST TIME:
In fine, this letter of Fairfield, is purely, a ruse, for political effect—just as wolves come in sheep's clothing—to gull the people, get up another glorious Aroostook humbug, pay Charles Jarvis and others another fat allowance of TEN DOLLARS per day, and then, perchance, leave the whole matter as he did before, in a much worse predicament than he found it.
In Gov. Kent's past course on the question of our North Eastern Boundary, the people have the strongest assurance of his untiring efforts to press this long-standing controversy to a SPEEDY and glorious termination. For the last six years all that has been done towards the adjustment of this question, has been done by EDWARD KENT aided by a Whig Legislature heretofore, and now by a Whig Congress and General Government.
Oh Kent is the man who'll ne'er "turn pale"
When the people bid him "swing the flail."!!!
