Idaho Farming.
Shoshone Journal.

The process of cultivation by irrigation seems somewhat slow to those not acquainted with it by practical experience. But these sagebrush lands of Idaho can all be made to produce abundantly by turning the surplus water of numerous streams upon them. Fruits, vegetables, grain and all kinds of clover and tame grasses grow luxuriantly. Boise valley orchards were loaded with fruits this year, and a large surplus rotted on the ground for lack of help to can, dry, or make into jellies and preserves. An interesting fact, indicating the mild climate of the valley, is stated by R. E. Strahorn, who informs the Journal that his young orchard at Caldwell is producing this year a second crop of apples. In October several handsome clusters of fruit, more than half grown, were picked from the trees, and some of them were taken east by Chicago friends as curiosities. Quite a fair crop of strawberries was picked this fall, having blossomed and ripened a second time. Mr. Strahorn scores a success in raising fruit trees on alkali ground, his orchard and door yard being very handsome and a great success. On about two-thirds of an acre sowed to alfalfa this year he has cut five crops of hay, and the sixth crop is growing. Mr. and Mrs. Strahorn have recently removed to Hailey, where, in connection with Robert Strahorn the well-known millionaire stock man of Chicago, he is building an elegant cottage hotel at the Hot Springs. In connection with these popular springs they have about 500 acres, which is being improved, grounds laid out, trees planted, and a handsome park completed. A large thoroughbred herd of short-horn cattle has been secured from Kentucky, and this place will soon be made the most attractive summer resort and residence in Idaho.
