Louis Sayles Cohen, BT-1c, USNR, was transferred from the USS Bushnell to the Naval Base Wednesday. On December 4, he will receive his navy discharge and return to the career of teaching which was cut short by his recall to duty. He will be missed by the men aboard the Bushnell where he was Education Coordinator, although his rating was not changed when he was called back in the Naval Reserve.

Cohen is actually a professor of mathematics, having been graduated from UCLA in January 1950 with a B. S. degree. In August, 1951, while still teaching at Roosevelt High School in East Los Angeles, he received his M. A. in Education.

Prior to leaving the Bushnell, he received a letter of commendation from Capt. Phillip W. Garnett which stated in part:

"The commanding officer takes great pleasure at this time, when you are leaving this vessel, to commence your separation from active Naval service, in commending you for your outstanding performance of duty on board as Information and Education Coordinator. You have been a 'teacher' in the highest sense of the word and have worked untiringly and unselfishly, without regard to working hours, to organize and make effective this vessel's educational and training program.

"Your work has permeated all departments of this ship and has contributed to the morale and efficiency of the command. For the individual, this program has been the instrument and your leadership, ship and counseling, the stimulus which has led to a re-kindled interest in personal betterment and specifically, to the attainment of high school diplomas by men ranking from seaman apprentice to lieutenant."

Upon discharge, next Thursday, Cohen will return to his home at 11965 Iowa Avenue, Los Angeles, Calif. and resume his position as professor of mathematics at Roosevelt High School.

Cohen first enlisted February 12, 1941 and was on the USS Black Hawk in Manila Bay when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He was transferred to the USS Lexington and remained with the aircraft carrier for the duration of World War II.

During this period, he was married to the former Miss Lillian Margulies of Santa Monica, Calif. They have a daughter, Patricia Jo, born July 29, 1946.

At war's end Cohen returned to high school to finish his credits for a diploma and was graduated with honors in January 1946. Then he headed for college. He worked at odd jobs, struggling to keep up both his education and his family's maintenance. It was a long and difficult struggle, but he went on to achieve the goal set. Those who know him congratulate him and wish him well.
