Full Text

An unusual act by an unidentified sea captain dispelled the perils of ocean fog recently and won the praise of the United States Hydrographic Bureau according to an announcement made from Norfolk, Va.

Southbound steamers passing dangerous Cape Lookout observed a bright beam pointing high above the dense fog hugging the water. Obviously it came from the searchlight on the deck of a northbound vessel.

And the vessels going in the opposite direction saw the light afar and gave it a wide berth.

The Hydrographic Bureau issued a special bulletin, commending the stranger for finding a way to warn others of his position while fog reduced visibility to a stone's throw and a raging gale made whistles inaudible.
