Allowance for the State.
By Theodore C. Diers.
Special to the Laramie Republican
Sheridan, Wyo., Aug. 1.-Reduction of the sugar allowance to two
pounds a month for each person in
a household, instead of three pounds,
and limiting hotels, restaurants and
other public eating houses to two
pounds for each ninety meals served,
is announced by the Wyoming division
of the United States food administration.
The critical shortage in sugar at
this time, brought about by the destruction of sugar ships by German
submarines and beet sugar factories
in the invaded districts of France,
has necessitated these further
reductions in the use of sugar.
The allowance of two pounds a
month a person is the same as that
of England. In France and Italy,
the ration is one pound a month when
sugar can be obtained.
Soda Fountains Closed.
Manufacturers of soft drinks and
candies are now receiving 50 per
cent of the amount of sugar used last
year. Ice cream manufacturers are
limited to 75 per cent and bakers to
70 per cent. This restriction has resulted in the closing of several soda
fountains in the state and at least
two candy manufacturers in Wyoming
are closed for lack of sugar.
The conservation division of the
food administration is urging the
housewives to can fruits without sugar now and add the sugar this winter when it is more plentiful.
Sugar for the State.
The total allotment of sugar for
Wyoming for all purposes is 491,000
pounds. Every sale of sugar is reported to the state food administrator
and consumers who have attempted to evade the restrictions by purchasing from different stores will be shut
off from further supplies during the
rest of this year.
