MRS. BEDFORD ADMITS CHILD WAS NOT HER OWN
New York Woman Will Get $100,000 of Fortune Left by Husband

London, May 26.—Mrs. Gunning D. Bedford, who was arrested at Queenstown May 16 on her arrival there from New York on the steamer Umbria, charged with making a false declaration of a child's birth, was brought up on remand at the Bow street police court here, and pleaded guilty. She admitted that the child was not her own, and said she had adopted it. Mrs. Bedford was fined $50.

The prosecution showed that Mrs. Bedford came to England from Paris in December, and that she advertised as "Madame B., desirous of adopting a female child," with the result that the illegitimate baby of a working girl in Isleworth was transferred to Mrs. Bedford's keeping under the name of Margaret Carnette. Mrs. Bedford registered the child as her own, and took it to Paris and thence to America. Counsel for the prosecution were not desirous of severe measures, and asked the magistrate to deal with the case as a technical offence and not send it to the higher courts, where a penalty of seven years' imprisonment could have been inflicted.

Mrs. Bedford Will Get $10,000.

New York, May 26.—An attorney of this city interested in the case said:

"Mrs. Bedford will receive $10,000 left by her husband, but the rest of the estate, about $300,000, which might have gone to the child, reverts to the American heirs, of whom there are five."

Story Details

Mrs. Bedford advertised for and adopted an illegitimate child in England, but registered it falsely as her own, leading to arrest at Queenstown, guilty plea, and $50 fine in London court. Consequently, she receives only $10,000 from her late husband's $300,000 estate, with the remainder going to American heirs instead of the child.
