READERS AND CORRESPONDENTS.
"Tristram," if he do not choose to write his life, will oblige us by his opinions. We have a great respect for the Shandy family: and whether this modern relative describe the harangues of Phutatorius, or translate Hafen Slawkenbergius's tenth Decad, he will be always agreeable to the Editor and his readers.
"Viator" seems to slumber too long at Rome "caravanary of rest, by the way." It is time for him to proceed on his promised journey. Let him saddle his palfrey, he will not want adventures. "Locus est, et pluribus umbris."
The Gentleman, who furnished the Editor with a detection of Aurora falsehood, respecting what Duane chooses to call the "intrigues in the cabinet," repeating the grade of General Smith, is solicited to communicate at his leisure, either his political or literary reflections.
"Antonius," like his namesake in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, is "no orator," as Brutus is, but a plain blunt man, who speaks right on. Like him too, he tells us that, which we ourselves do know. His communication would not furnish any new ideas to our readers, and, as to expression, the communication from Antonius does not come to us, "clothed with a rich wardrobe of words."
"Mercator" is requested to continue his essays. The subject, at this time, is peculiarly interesting, and a current topic among the politicians.
The "Banks" a new song, would if inserted, defeat the usual objects of music and poetry. Far from cheering, it would compose and stupify our readers. The author may well exclaim in the initial lines of Shenstone's pastoral,
"My Banks they are furnished with Bees
Whose murmurs invite one to sleep?"
An arrival at New York from Liverpool, has brought London papers to June 26—one day the latest: they contain nothing of importance some extracts are given in this day's paper.
