Better Understanding Asked Between British, Jamaicans

KINGSTON, Jamaica-(NNPA)- Cooperation between welfare groups in Jamaica and Britain to bring about better understanding between immigrants and the British people is recommended in a report issued Wednesday by Mr. Manley, the British colony's Chief Minister.

The report reaches the conclusion that "demands for additional manpower in Britain will find a ready response from the West Indies for many years to come." Among its recommendations are:

1. A program of education in Jamaica for intended immigrants to Britain.

2. The development of a Jamaican or British West Indian Welfare service in Britain.

The proposed extension of the Jamaican Welfare Office in Britain will await the meeting of the West Indies Regional Economic Committee in Antigua next month. By then the full report will be available for study in the whole of the British West Indies.

The study of the problems faced by Jamaicans and other West Indian immigrants to Britain was made by Dr. Senior, chief of Puerto Rican migrant services in New York and Douglas Manley, son of the Chief Minister. Their findings are being studied by the Jamaican Government.

The report points out that West Indian immigration to Britain is not an isolated movement but is part of the larger movement of people to Britain throughout most of the present century, and especially since World War II.

The present immigration therefore represents a challenge to both the immigrants and the population of Britain and the speed with which the newcomers climb the occupational ladder will depend on how both sides react to this challenge.

Publication of the report coincided with the departure of 160 more Jamaicans to Britain Wednesday night.
