Dramatic Recital by Miss Nellie Peck Saunders
The dramatic recital given by Mrs. Nellie Peck Saunders on Tuesday evening last was a rare treat. Mrs. Saunders showed herself a most finished elocutionist, a mistress of the art, running to tears in one selection and provoking to laughter in the next. It was hard to say in what line of dramatic art the fair young impersonator was most charming. As the old Manx (Bishop of 'The Deemster,' who stifles love for duty's sake and pronounces sentence on his own loved son; as the little boy who found the way of the transgressor hard, very hard; as the interesting old gossip or the embarrassed hostess of the 'Canton Tea,' she was equally delightful. One most beautiful selection was 'Nearer, My God, to Thee,' in pantomime, while a quartet of male voices sang the familiar words.
Some excellent music rendered by Messrs. Washburne, McWilliams and Johnson. Mrs. Jordan and Miss Amy Jordan added to the pleasure of the evening.
