Extract of a letter from New-Jersey, Oct. 7.
"The tories in New-York, since the death of the late Marquis of Rockingham, & changes in administration in consequence, once more hold up their heads, talk big & bluster: yet, notwithstanding, it is generally believed (and that too among themselves) that the British troops will evacuate that place before winter is over."
Reports still continue to circulate, that a strong force from Canada is certainly destined to act against this state: in consequence, the militia are ordered to hold themselves in readiness to march on the shortest notice.
The opinions respecting the object of this expedition are various; the most prevailing one is, that if such a thing does take place, it is destined as a diversion in favor of Sir Guy, while he moves off with the garrison of New York.
