Full Text
That portion of General Fremont's recent proclamation, which threatens to set free the negroes of secessionists in arms, seems to meet with approbation in loyal slave States. It does not propose to set free any slaves but those belonging to traitors. The shortest way to be rid of the negroes of secessionists, who run away to the war, and leave them behind, is to set them adrift and let them shift for themselves. It is no part of the business of the Government to feed them or take care of them—furnish them clothing or medical attention. If their masters turn traitors and leave them behind while they go off to fight against the Government, they can scarcely hope that this same Government will undertake to board them and lodge them till they return. The rule does not apply to the slaves of Union men. We cannot see why any Union man should care much what becomes of the darkies of secessionists. We do not see what particular impropriety there is in turning them out to graze for themselves, particularly where there is no public crib to 'pick' at. It is necessary 'to fight the Devil with fire' sometimes, as the old adage has it.
