Democrats Overwhelmed as Result of Financial Scandal
Butte, Mont., April 5.—Socialists Monday swept Butte, electing mayor, city treasurer, police judge and five out of nine aldermen. Two years ago the Democrats elected every candidate in Silver Bow county. The upset followed the exposure of alleged shortage disclosed by a recent one year old audit of the financial affairs of Butte.
Socialists in Walkerville, a suburb, elected two of three aldermen.
The Rev. L. J. Duncan, a Unitarian preacher, was elected mayor of Butte over J. J. Quinn, Democrat by a plurality of 1834, the largest ever given a mayor here. Duncan carried every ward except one.
Thomas J. Boorheer, who attracted national attention at a Western Federation of Miners' convention in Denver two years ago by his remarks on the American flag, was elected police judge.
Helena elected one Socialist alderman, the first socialist ever elected to office there.
