Castlegate.—After 234 hours of ceaseless search into the blackened depths of ill fated mine No. 2 here, where 172 men were killed almost instantly on the morning of March 8, the last two bodies were brought to the surface Tuesday morning at 2 o'clock. They were immediately identified as those of Pete Dunis and Basil Gettins.
Heretofore it was thought that there were 173 men in the mine, but a complete check shows 172 entered.
The discovery of the two bodies in the mine disperses the mystery that surrounded the mischeck in the number of bodies taken out of the mine and those actually in the morgue. It was believed that one body had disappeared from the morgue and had been buried, but the recovery of two bodies in the mine accounts for the number of men listed in at the time of the explosion. The two bodies in the morgue were identified as Thomas Pelly Jr. and Steve Speros, which clears up the question of identity and recovery.
Every man who was in the mine when the explosion occurred has now been recovered and identified, according to Utah Fuel officials. Only those who were eye witnesses and saw the conditions realize what a tremendous task evolved around the recovery and the much more difficult task of identification.
The recovery of the last two raises the total to 172 men killed in the disaster, and one, George Wilson, killed in rescue work.
With the last body out there was a sigh of relief in Castlegate. Hundreds of rescue crews and mine superintendents, who had only dozed intermittently during the last ten days, dropped down exhausted and slept. Frank N. Cameron, vice president and general manager of the Utah Fuel; C. B. Motchkiss, assistant to the general manager and Ferdinand Ericksen, head of the legal department have arrived here from Salt Lake and proceeded to clear the ground and prepare for the restoration of the ill fated mine.
