Now, however, we are happy to announce that an organization has been formed, which promises the best results to our Agricultural, Mechanical and Stock raising interests. The initials at the head of this article are full of meaning.
The "Emporia Agricultural, Mechanical and Stock Association" is fully incorporated and organized. The directors are as follows:
T. C. Watson, P. B. Plumb, Noyes Spicer, J. S. McWhorter, A. Savery, E. R. Holderman, J. S. Cleveland, C. H. North and H. C. Cross.
The incorporators, as above, met on Monday night last, at the law office of Ruggles & Plumb and organized the Society by the election of the following officers: President, Noyes Spicer; Secretary, A. E. Bancroft; Treasurer, H. C. Cross.
The capital stock of the Society is $10,000. This is divided into shares of $20 each. An assessment of 50 per cent. has been made, and the Society has already bought forty acres of land a mile west of the city, which they will immediately commence improving. It is known as the Cantrall forty, and fronts on Sixth avenue and runs back to the track of the A. T. & S. F. railroad. The site is both eligible and beautiful.
Messrs. Plumb, Spicer and North are at work on a set of by-laws, while the President and Secretary have been instructed to open books for the subscription of stock.
The following gentlemen have subscribed the amount of stock named: T. C. Watson, $1,000, P. B. Plumb, Noyes Spicer, E. R. Holderman, C. H. North, J. S. Cleveland, J. S. McWhorter, A. Savery, H. C. Cross, and Harvey Bancroft, each $200. It will thus be seen that about $3,000 of the stock is already taken.
Enough more is pledged to insure the success of the Society. Stock can be taken of the Secretary or any of the members, all of whom are authorized to receipt for the money.
It seems useless for us to say anything in the way of urging our people to lend their aid to this enterprise. All know the great benefit such organizations are to the communities in which they exist, when they are properly conducted. The names which are connected with this society will be a sufficient guaranty that its affairs will be properly conducted. Besides the benefit the society will be to every citizen of the county, it is expected that its stock will soon be good property. In fact, there is no reason why it should not be worth its face from the start. The Society is organized upon the same principle, and will be conducted similarly to the St. Louis Agricultural and Mechanical Association, whose stock to-day is worth two hundred per cent., and which is the most successful society of the kind in the country.
We are truly glad that this matter has assumed the shape it has, and hope our leading farmers, mechanics and stock raisers will become members of the association.
