GREENWOOD, Miss. - Miss Carolyn Yvette Williams, senior at Broad Street High School, recently received notice that she had won the coveted scholarship of $400.00 per year to the college of her choice, given by the National Scholarship Service and Funds for Negro Students, New York City.
Miss Williams became eligible for the scholarship when she competed in the Scholarship Qualifying Test, directed by the Educational Testing Service of Princeton, New Jersey. The test was given at Broad Street High School. This test was taken by 300,000 students throughout the United States with 17,000 qualifying for honors. This is the first time a local student has won a Merit Scholarship Award.
Miss Williams who resigned as the 1957 "Miss Homecoming of Broad Street High" is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilburn Williams. Mr. Williams is an army officer and Mrs. Williams is an English instructor at Broad Street High.
