PHILADELPHIA, June 2.

Such circumspection and secrecy mark the proceedings of the federal convention, that the members find it difficult to acquire the habit of communication, even among themselves, and are so cautious in defeating the curiosity of the public, that all debate is suspended, upon the entrance of their own inferior offices. Though we readily admit the propriety of excluding an indiscriminate attendance upon the discussion of this deliberative council, it is hoped that the privacy of their transactions will be an additional motive for dispatch, as the anxiety of the people must be necessarily increased, by every appearance of mystery in conducting this important business.

It is curious to remark the fanciful opinions that are advanced by the variety of politicians that take this opportunity of fabricating schemes for the continental government; but it is astonishing that some very serious minds should indulge the absurd project of grafting a monarchy (no matter whether the ostensible individual is called king, dictator, or governor) upon the prevailing democratic systems. History cannot furnish an instance of a change from a popular government (the restoration of Charles the II. and the late revolution in Sweden were but sudden paroxysms) to a regal one, but through the medium of a violent convulsion; and in that case what has been acquired by force, can only be preserved by despotism; for, says a celebrated tyrant, "crowns got by blood, must be by blood maintained."

Coolly and deliberately to vest a single person with the attributes of sovereignty, would amount to suicide in those who have so nobly acquitted themselves in a contest with monarchical ambition.
