Full Text

We learn from Mr. Owen Dix who was at Spanish Fork last Friday, says the Salt Lake Tribune of the 13th, that a band of Uinta Indians were camped there, having in their possession a white girl about 8 or 10 years old. The squaws endeavored to keep the child concealed, but Mr. Dix seeing a bundle in one of the wickiups, approached to uncover it when he discovered the child, which appeared to be very much frightened and began crying. The child is represented as being quite fair, with flaxen hair, dressed as the Indians, and exceedingly timid in the presence of whites. This timidity may be induced, however, by the Indians prejudicing it against the whites by horrid tales. The band broke camp last week, and it is presumed they have returned to the Uinta agency. Tabiona, the chief, was with the band. As they belong to Major Kich-i-now's agency, perhaps he can explain the presence of this white child in their midst. The Indians are very reticent about her, and the only information the settlers at Spanish Fork could get was that she had been found in Colorado.
