Indian UN Delegation Told To Boost Mme. Pandit For Prexy

BY PIERRE J. HUSS

UNITED NATIONS, N. Y. - (INS) - The India UN delegation received instructions from New Delhi to launch a drive for the election of Madame V. L. Pandit as President of the Eighth Annual Assembly starting September 15.

The pert Indian woman, sister of Prime Minister Pandit Nehru, is making her bid in competition to that of Prince Wan Waithayakon of Thailand, believed to be generally favored by the United States as next Assembly President.

From the American viewpoint, Madame Pandit's candidacy foreshadowed a drive to rally nations sympathetic to Red China and steal the initiative from those against a forgiveness policy on Korea.

It is believed at UN that the New Delhi decision in part represents an answer to U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles' statements on Asia in the past two days and his decision to fly to the Far East to consult with ROK President Syngman Rhee.

Reports are current at UN also that during his trip he will confer with Chiang Kai-Shek.

The incumbent UN assembly President, Lester B. Pearson of Canada, will stay in office through the special session starting August 17 which will ratify the Korean Truce.

But the candidacy of Madame Pandit for the September 15 session clearly laid down a challenge to the U. S. that Prime Minister Nehru is determined to assume the leadership in coming conferences affecting a Korean settlement and the shaping of peace in the Far East.

Prince Wan has been canvassing UN delegations for some weeks and has gathered extensive support among Latin American and Middle West countries.

The India delegation said yesterday that majority support for Madame Pandit is anticipated from among the 15 member Arab-Asian bloc. Britain and the commonwealth members are being asked for all-out cooperation and support in electing Madame Pandit.

With the U. S. firmly committed to opposing any "soft" policy toward Red China, such as easing the existing trade embargo and opening the way toward seating of Peiping in UN in place of nationalist China, there is bound to be a sharp clash with those nations supporting Madame Pandit.

Event Details

The India UN delegation received instructions from New Delhi to launch a drive for the election of Madame V. L. Pandit as President of the Eighth Annual Assembly starting September 15, in competition with Prince Wan Waithayakon of Thailand, favored by the United States. Madame Pandit's candidacy is seen as a drive to rally nations sympathetic to Red China and challenge U.S. policy on Korea. This represents an answer to recent statements by U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who plans to consult with ROK President Syngman Rhee and possibly Chiang Kai-Shek. Incumbent President Lester B. Pearson will stay through the special session starting August 17 to ratify the Korean Truce. Prince Wan has gathered support from Latin American and Middle West countries. The India delegation anticipates support from the Arab-Asian bloc and seeks cooperation from Britain and commonwealth members. With U.S. opposition to softening policy toward Red China, a clash is expected.
