(SPECIAL TO THE DAILY SENTINEL.)
The "Times" and "Herald" on Blaine.
New York, June 3.
The Times summarizes the first ballot at Cincinnati this morning as follows: Blaine, 86; Bristow, 110; Conkling, 75; Hartranft, 58; Hayes, 40; Jewell, 12; Morton, 11; Washburne, 1; unknown, 31; necessary for choice, 377.
The developments of Blaine's investigation in Washington, however, threaten to upset all these calculations.
The Herald says, editorially: The developments in the Blaine matter will be read with profound regret by the whole country without distinction of party; for we have a pride in our public men. The fall of a man as conspicuous as Blaine is a misfortune. No one can doubt, after reading the evidence of that curious creature, Mulligan, that Blaine is not worthy of the confidence of the country. Men who had any hand in this gigantic robbery, for robbery it was, deserve no mercy from Americans. Blaine can give no explanation of his relations with the railway consistent with his duties as an honorable, self-respecting member of the House; and the developments remove him from any consideration as a candidate for the presidency. There is no man in public life for whom we have kinder feeling and for whose conceded intellectual force and patriotism we have higher appreciation than Blaine.
