POET'S CORNER.
On WINTER.
No more the birds on ev'ry blooming spray
Strike in melodious notes the tuneful lay:
No more the stately trees with leaves are crown'd,
The leaves fall dry and wither'd to the ground.
Clad in her sable weeds see nature mourns,
And gloomy winter's chilling cold returns.
No more the cool, no more the gentle breeze,
Nor fanning zephyrs whisper thro' the trees:
No more the daisies paint th' enamel'd fields,
No more the hyacinth its odour yields:
Stript of its blooming pride, the tulip dies,
And on the earth the golden jonquil lies;
The lilies droop their heads, their verdure lost,
And ev'ry flow'r is blasted with the frost.
No more the sun its genial heat displays,
Just peeps, but soon withdraws its cheering rays.
Lo! o'er our heads the low'ring clouds impend,
The flood gates open and the rains descend;
The gentle streams forget their usual course,
Nor flow in winding channels from their source;
But overpass their constituted bounds,
And pour their waters o'er the neighb'ring grounds:
Trees, houses, cattle, undistinguish'd fall,
And one vast torrent overwhelms them all.
