IMPORTANT ARRESTS.
SEIZURE OF REBEL GOLD.
Maj. W. H. Gibbon, Q.M. U.S.A., Geo. E. Taylor, Q.M.C.S.A., and Robert Herr, private in rebel service, on breaking up of Lee's army were in Richmond, and had about $47,000 in gold belonging to the rebel government in their possession. After leaving Richmond Herr, under orders from Taylor and Gibbon, buried about $20,000 of the amount near the Dan river, in North Carolina, which they subsequently dug up and 'spent freely' in and about Richmond.
The facts becoming known to the Government, Taylor and Herr, about two weeks ago, were arrested in Richmond and brought to this city and placed in the Old Capitol. It is supposed that nearly all the money has been spent by them, but the Government has succeeded in obtaining possession of about $3,000 of it. The prisoners are still held to await further developments. They have employed able counsel. There is little doubt but that Herr and Taylor, upon the fall of the rebellion, supposed that whatever belonged to it was common property, and subject to the 'grab game,' when, in fact, everything that belonged to the so-called 'confederate government' legitimately belongs to the Government of the United States.
