Full Text

A Loathsome Object.

Mike Watkins, the old colored man who is an inmate of the county poor farm, but who spends most of his time lying around draining empty beer kegs and bottles thrown out in the alleys was stretched out on the sidewalk sunning at Haubelt's corner on Wednesday. He had a festering sore on one of his legs which he was dressing, when he was observed by Liveryman Bailey, over across at Lusk & Parks' stables. Bailey procured some cresylic ointment used on the stock around the stable, and going over to where old Mike was lying, poured some of it on the putrid spot, when in a few seconds maggots and screw-worms began to squirm and boil out as thick as any vermin that ever infested a rotten carcass.
