Full Text
It is substantial cause for deep and lasting regret, that from the very commencement of our troubles any American taken in arms has been suffered to escape the gallows. That expiative instrument of justice, and finisher of the law, ought to have commenced operations with the first offenders. Had they had justice done them, in all probability there would have been an end to the business at once: but, at any rate, we are perfectly satisfied, that if the rascals captured in the schr. Ann had been executed within a week, the affair of Point au Pelee would never have occurred, and some twenty-five of our brave soldiers of the 32d Regiment would have been saved, some from death, and some from being maimed for life. The United States swarms with vermin, and confident we are that every good-minded American would gladly see a premium offered for their destruction at so much per head.
Among the good-minded, however, we do not count Van Buren, his Cabinet, or his prodigious host of office-holders.
