"Ike" for President
WASHINGTON. (AP) - Senator Cain (R.-Wash.) asked about General Dwight D. Eisenhower as a Presidential possibility, said yesterday that few men have a similar mastery "of things military and political."
Cain, in a radio interview, declined otherwise to comment on the developing drive among some Republicans to nominate the army chief of staff for President. Eisenhower is to become president of Columbia university next year.
The west coast Senator was asked about the adequacy of Alaskan defenses against the possibility of an attack by Russia. He replied:
"I would say that the defenses of Alaska are keeping pace with the needs and the demands of the day in which we live. I, as a citizen and not a Senator, was very much encouraged by what I saw going on in those northern lands of ours."
Cain was in Alaska for several weeks recently. He said that 'If trouble comes,' Alaska would be the first point of attack.
