We have often expressed our approbation of such societies, and our belief that they had already made great progress in the accomplishment of their benevolent designs. There is not as much intemperance in New England as there was a year or two ago, and in many of our country towns the reformation is most wonderfully apparent.- The plan proposed by the temperance societies is in most respects judicious. The members come under an honorable obligation to set an example of temperance, and every one knows that example is better than precept. Society generally gets its moral tone from the example of a few influential individuals. They give the pitch and the community join in the chorus. When, therefore, such men wholly abstain from the use of intoxicating liquors, it is reasonable to expect it will become unfashionable to use them, and consequently intemperance be suppressed without coercion, by the free and voluntary consent of the community.-Journal.
