In a statement issued from New York, Ashley L. Totten, International Secretary Treasurer of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and president of the Virgin Islands Civic Association, declared that he has no desire to dampen the hopes and aspirations of other candidates for the governorship.
"I am committed to an all-out united fight for the appointment of a native. If the field is thoroughly explored and no native has been found satisfactory to the wishes of the majority of the people, I am, therefore, submitting my name for a fair and just consideration before the post falls into strange hands, and native autonomy is made to face a setback of at least one hundred years."
Mr. Totten said that if the people themselves indicate that they want him as governor, he would give a detailed explanation of his program of action.
"I feel that I have earned the admiration and respect of my native friends and do not need to make any special appeal to the people who share equally my willingness to serve and to give all that is in me, regardless of their station in life. I make no appeal to you as a St. Thomian, a St. Johnian or a Crucian. I am a Virgin Islander."
